東御苑

Tokyo · Kanto

The East Gardens of the Imperial Palace occupy the inner citadel of Edo Castle, and they open five days a week — not Mondays or Fridays, and not between 28 December and 3 January. Entry is free and needs no reservation. Inside are the stone foundations of the castle keep, the Ninomaru grove and a landscaped garden, on the ground where the shogun's castle stood.

Why we picked it

Many travelers focus on the more famous attractions in Tokyo, overlooking this peaceful garden.
