Niijima White Sand

新島の白い砂

Tokyo · Kanto

Niijima's white-sand beach is a long, pale, surf-facing strand in the Izu Islands, free and open at all hours, with a seaside hot-spring pool on the island that is also free to use. Reaching it means a ferry from Tokyo's Takeshiba Pier, roughly two to three hours by fast boat, so it is an overnight trip rather than a day out. Summer is the season; outside it much of the island's tourist infrastructure winds down.

Why it's hidden

Many mainstream travelers overlook Niijima due to its remote location and limited accessibility.
