Irohazaka Winding Road

いろは坂

Tochigi · Kanto

The Irohazaka Winding Road climbs from Nikko town to the Oku-Nikko plateau in 48 hairpin turns, one for each character of the old Japanese syllabary, on a pair of one-way roads that carry traffic up and down separately. The Akechidaira lookout partway up gives the widest view. The forested slopes it climbs through turn colour through October.

Why it's hidden

Many travelers focus on the more famous attractions in Nikko and overlook this picturesque drive.
