The Irohazaka Winding Road climbs from Nikko town to the Oku-Nikko plateau in 48 hairpin turns, one for each character of the old Japanese syllabary, on a pair of one-way roads that carry traffic up and down separately. The Akechidaira lookout partway up gives the widest view. The forested slopes it climbs through turn colour through October.
