Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine
川越氷川神社Saitama · Kanto
Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine stands just north of the old town and served as the tutelary shrine of Kawagoe castle town through the Edo period, supported by successive castle lords and by the townspeople. Its main hall, built in 1850, is covered in carvings whose principal subject is the figures that ride the Kawagoe Festival floats, and the shrine's annual shinko-sai procession is regarded as the origin of that festival. Five deities are enshrined, two married couples among them, and the shrine is visited above all as a place of prayer for matchmaking.
