Mount Oyama (Oyama Afuri Shrine)

大山(大山阿夫利神社)

Kanagawa · Kanto

A 1,252m sacred mountain on the border of Isehara, Hadano and Atsugi, topped by Oyama Afuri Shrine, a rain-and-harvest shrine that has drawn pilgrims for over two millennia; a funicular connects the base to the Lower Shrine at 700m.

Why we picked it

Famous within Japan as a historic pilgrimage mountain (Oyama-mairi), but sees far fewer foreign visitors than Takao or Fuji, and doubles as the recognizable anchor for the wider Tanzawa foothills.
