Ueno Zoo
恩賜上野動物園Tokyo · Kanto
Ueno Zoo opened in 1882 as Japan's first zoo and occupies two halves of Ueno Park linked by a monorail-replacement shuttle and a footbridge, with the five-storey pagoda of the old Kan'ei-ji temple standing inside the grounds. It is best known for its giant pandas, and also keeps a large Japanese-species section including the Tsushima leopard cat and the Japanese serow. The west garden wraps Shinobazu Pond, so the walk between halves runs along the water.
