Sumida Aquarium

すみだ水族館

Tokyo · Kanto

Sumida Aquarium occupies two floors inside the Tokyo Skytree complex and is built around open-top tanks rather than tunnels, so visitors look down into the water from the walkway. Its centrepiece is a large indoor pool holding Magellanic penguins and fur seals, visible from a café that lets you sit alongside it, and a dedicated hall displays goldfish varieties bred in Edo-period Japan as a craft tradition. There is no natural light, so it works as a wet-weather stop.

Why we picked it

It sits under the most-visited tower in Tokyo, which means most people queue for the observation deck and never learn the aquarium is there.

Note

  • Last admission, and the last ticket sale, one hour before closing.
  • The aquarium sets its hours by calendar rather than by fixed weekday, so the day lines above are the usual pattern and the published calendar governs any single date.
  • It states 年中無休 — no closing days at all — which covers the New Year period.
  • Maintenance or a private event can still close it for a day, and weather can shorten the hours.
