Yokoamicho Park in Sumida is built on the site of a former army clothing depot where tens of thousands died in the firestorm following the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, and it holds the memorial hall and ossuary for those victims and for the 1945 air raids. It is a quiet, deliberately sombre green space in a dense part of Tokyo. Its cherry trees flower in late March.
