Hie Shrine

Hie Shrine stands on a wooded rise in Nagatacho, Tokyo, between the National Diet Building and the Akasaka office district. It served as the guardian shrine of Edo Castle and is still styled the protector of the imperial citadel. An escalator and a tunnel of red torii climb the slope to a broad courtyard, and a treasure hall on the grounds displays swords and shrine objects. The shrine hosts the Sanno Matsuri, counted among the three great festivals of Edo.
