Mount Tsukuba (Tsukubasan Shrine)

筑波山神社

Ibaraki · Kanto

Base shrine (~3,000 years of history, enshrining Izanagi/Izanami) at the foot of twin-peaked Mount Tsukuba (877m), the lowest of Japan's '100 Famous Mountains'. Gateway to the cable car (to the male peak) and ropeway (to the female peak), both offering sweeping Kanto Plain views without requiring a serious hike.

Why we picked it

Ibaraki's most climbed mountain and the shrine at its foot, a twin-peaked profile visible across the Kanto plain and reachable from Tokyo in under two hours.
