Mount Tsukuba
筑波山Ibaraki · Kanto
筑波山 is a twin-headed mountain standing alone above the Kanto plain, and its top is a developed place rather than a wild one: a cable car runs to the saddle between the two peaks, where there are shops, a shrine and transmitter masts, and walkers arrive on the same ground as people who rode up in eight minutes. The higher head, 女体山 at 877 m, is reached by a short stepped climb from that saddle, and the reward is the plain laid out flat in every direction — on a clear day as far as the sea. The standard walking route is the 御幸ヶ原コース from Tsukuba-san Shrine, about 2 km and 610 m of climbing, which the mountain's own operator times at 90 minutes up and 70 down.
