Meiji Jingu Shrine

Meiji Jingu opens at sunrise and closes at sunset, so its gates move through the year — roughly 6:40–16:20 in January and 5:00 to past 18:00 in midsummer — and entry to the shrine grounds is free every day of the year. It enshrines Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, and the forest around it was planted rather than found, which is why a walk from the torii to the hall takes about ten minutes under closed canopy in the middle of Tokyo.

- The shrine is NOT open 24 hours — arriving after dusk means a closed gate.
Note
- Opens at sunrise and closes at sunset, so the gates move through the year: roughly 6:40–16:20 in January and 5:00–18:00 in June.
- Hours are extended over New Year (31 Dec – early Jan).
- The inner garden and treasure museum keep their own shorter hours and charge separately.
