Futarasan Shrine
日光二荒山神社Tochigi · Kanto
Futarasan Shrine is the oldest of Nikko's three UNESCO-listed sanctuaries, founded in 782 and dedicated to the mountain deities of Nantai, Nyoho and Taro, whose peaks it still administers as sacred ground. Its vermilion buildings sit in cedar forest a short walk from Toshogu but draw a fraction of the crowds, and the grounds hold a sacred bridge, a spring said to confer good fortune and a pair of intertwined cedars visited for matchmaking. The shrine also owns the Chuzenji lakeside precinct and the summit of Mount Nantai itself.
