Kosenji Temple

光泉寺

Gunma · Kanto

Kosenji is the hilltop Shingon Buddhist temple reached by a stone staircase rising directly from beside the Yubatake, dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of healing and medicine. Founded in 721 and long regarded as the guardian temple of Kusatsu's waters, its grounds give one of the best elevated views over the steaming hot-water field below.

Why we picked it

Crowds cluster at the Yubatake without climbing the steps just above it, so the temple that spiritually presides over the whole hot spring stays quiet even at peak times.

Crowd level
Moderate
Opening hours
Daily Open 24 hours (grounds); main hall daylight hours

Usual hours — confirm with the official site for holidays + seasonal closures.

Admission
Free to enter. Temple grounds and steps are freely accessible; donations welcome. Reached by the stone staircase directly beside the Yubatake.
Nearest station
No rail access — JR bus ~25 min from Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station to Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal, then ~5 min walk and up the steps beside the Yubatake
