Yunishigawa Onsen is a remote mountain hot-spring village in northern Tochigi, settled by tradition by Heike clan survivors who hid here after their defeat in the Genpei War of the 1180s. Each winter the valley stages a snow-hut and lantern festival, when candle-lit kamakura are built along the riverbank. Reaching it takes roughly three hours from Tokyo, and most visitors stay overnight at a ryokan.
