Shakujii Park

石神井公園

Tokyo · Kanto

A large park in western Nerima Ward built around two spring-fed ponds, Shakujii Pond and Sampo-ji Pond, with birdwatching, boating, and the earthwork ruins of 14th-15th century Shakujii Castle, seat of the Toshima samurai clan. Established as a formal park in 1959, it remains a quiet local retreat far from the city center. Best timed for spring cherry blossoms (late March-early April) and autumn foliage (November).

Why we picked it

Deep in the western wards with no major train line running directly through it, so it draws almost none of Tokyo's inbound tourist traffic despite genuine castle-ruin history.
