Ningyocho District

人形町

Tokyo · Kanto

Ningyocho is an open public neighbourhood of streets and shops with no admission — the interest is that it still works as one, with ningyo-yaki bakers, tsukudani shops and old kitchen-supply trades operating from ordinary shopfronts. The name comes from the puppet theatres that stood here in the Edo period, and two mechanical clock towers on Ningyocho-dori perform on the hour.

Why we picked it

Many travelers focus on more popular districts like Shibuya and Shinjuku, overlooking the unique charm of Ningyocho.
