Kusatsu Onsen

草津温泉

Gunma · Kanto

Kusatsu Onsen is one of Japan's most famous hot spring resorts, known for its high-quality sulfuric waters. The town features a unique Yubatake (hot water field) in the center, which is a symbol of the area and offers visitors a chance to experience traditional onsen culture. The three public bathhouses run by the town — Otaki-no-yu, Goza-no-yu and the Sainokawara open-air bath — do not turn away bathers with tattoos, and say so on their own FAQ while explicitly welcoming visitors from abroad. That covers those three baths; ryokan and hotel baths in the town set their own rules.

Why we picked it

Despite its popularity, many travelers overlook it for more commercialized onsen towns.
