Kawagoe Castle Honmaru Goten
川越城本丸御殿Saitama · Kanto
The Honmaru Goten is the surviving palace of Kawagoe Castle, standing on the castle's former inner bailey a short walk east of the old town. It was built in 1848 for the Kawagoe domain lord Matsudaira Naritsune, and the entrance hall, great hall and senior retainers' room remain, the retainers' block having been moved off site and later returned. Kawagoe was treated as the northern guard of Edo and its lords were senior shogunate officials; very few Edo-period castle palaces of this kind survive in Japan.
