Senba Toshogu Shrine

仙波東照宮

Saitama · Kanto

Senba Toshogu is a small shrine to Tokugawa Ieyasu on a wooded rise immediately south of Kita-in temple. It was founded in 1633, after Ieyasu's remains had rested at Kita-in in 1617 while being carried from Kunozan to Nikko and funeral rites were held there. The present buildings date from a rebuilding in 1640 and are designated an Important Cultural Property; the shrine is counted with Nikko and Kunozan as one of the three great Toshogu.

Why we picked it

The third of the three great Toshogu shrines, and the only one almost nobody visits.
