Toki no Kane Bell Tower

時の鐘

Saitama · Kanto

A three-tier wooden bell tower about 16 metres high stands over a lane off Kawagoe's warehouse street and is the town's best-known landmark. A tower was first raised on this spot by Kawagoe castle lord Sakai Tadakatsu between 1627 and 1634, and the present belfry was rebuilt in 1894, the year after the Great Kawagoe Fire. An automatic striking mechanism sounds the bell four times a day, at 6:00, noon, 15:00 and 18:00, and the sound was chosen in 1996 for the Environment Agency's list of 100 Soundscapes of Japan.

Why we picked it

A working Edo-era timekeeping tower that still strikes on schedule, viewed from the street rather than ticketed.
