The Nezu Museum closes on Mondays and charges ¥1,600 for the collection (¥1,800 and up for special exhibitions), with last entry at 16:30. Its galleries hold pre-modern Japanese and East Asian art including seven National Treasures, and the ticket also admits you to a wooded garden of about 17,000 square metres behind the building, with tea houses and a stream.

Why we picked it

Many travelers overlook this museum in favor of larger, more famous institutions.
