Taiyuinbyo

大猷院

Tochigi · Kanto

The mausoleum of Tokugawa Iemitsu, third shogun and grandson of Ieyasu, built into the hillside above Nikko in 1653 and deliberately made darker and quieter than his grandfather's shrine next door — black lacquer, gold and copper-green rather than white and vermilion. Two hundred and sixty stone lanterns line the climb through its four gates.

Why we picked it

It stands a few minutes from Toshogu and takes a fraction of its crowd, which is precisely the effect its designers intended.
