Owakudani Valley

Owakudani is a volcanic valley of active sulphur vents above Hakone, free to walk in the viewpoint area at the top of the ropeway. The Natural Research Trail — the path that goes in among the vents — is a guided walk that must be reserved in advance and costs ¥800 a person; it is not something you can join on the day. The black eggs boiled in the hot springs are sold at the station building.
