Tsukiji Outer Market

築地場外市場

Tokyo · Kanto

The Tsukiji Outer Market is the surviving street of retail fishmongers, knife shops, tamagoyaki stalls and small restaurants — the tuna auction and the inner wholesale market left for Toyosu in 2018, so there is no auction to see here. Trading is a morning business: 6:00 to 9:00 is priority time for professional buyers, general shopping runs to about 14:00, and many stalls sell out and shutter earlier. It is closed on Sundays and national holidays.

Why we picked it

Many travelers focus on the inner market or other attractions in Tokyo, overlooking this bustling food haven.

Note

  • Day lines describe the market as a whole.
  • Sunday closure is consistent across the market and is the one reliable weekly closure.
  • The market also closes on national holidays, and over New Year, typically around December 30 to January 4.
  • Some Wednesdays are closing days as well, but this is NOT every Wednesday — it follows the Tokyo Central Wholesale Market calendar, and it is mainly the larger fishmongers and wholesalers that shut.
  • Street food and restaurants generally still trade on a Wednesday, so a Wednesday visit works for eating but is thinner for shopping.
  • Check the official monthly calendar at tsukiji.or.jp before committing a Wednesday.
  • Officially 6:00 AM – 9:00 AM is priority time for professional trade buyers; general public shopping is 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM.
  • Visitors who are not trade buyers should plan for the 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM window, though many food stalls do serve tourists from around 7:00 AM.
  • Every shop keeps its own hours.
  • Many stalls sell out and close well before 2:00 PM, and quite a few shutter around 1:00 PM.
  • The inner wholesale market and the tuna auction moved to Toyosu in 2018 — there is no auction at Tsukiji.
