Suga Shrine Steps (Your Name / Kimi no Na wa)

須賀神社(男坂)

Tokyo · Kanto

The long red-railed stairway (the otokozaka) outside Suga Shrine in Yotsuya is the exact spot of the final scene in Makoto Shinkai's 'Your Name' (Kimi no Na wa), where Taki and Mitsuha pass each other, turn, and finally ask each other's names. Visitors climb the same slope framed by the shrine gate at the top and residential Shinjuku falling away below, recreating the film's closing shot. The shrine itself is a quiet Edo-era Inari-Tenno shrine that most tourists would otherwise never find.

Why we picked it

An ordinary neighborhood shrine stairway with no signage about the film; only pilgrims who know the movie recognize it, and it sits off the main Yotsuya tourist path.
