The Railway Museum (Omiya)

鉄道博物館

Saitama · Kanto

The Railway Museum in Omiya is a large indoor museum of Japanese railway history operated by the East Japan Railway Culture Foundation. Its main hall holds dozens of preserved locomotives and carriages, from Meiji-era steam engines to early Shinkansen cars, arranged around a working turntable, with further floors on rolling-stock engineering, signalling and railway operations. Driving simulators and a miniature train circuit can be booked, and the museum has its own station on the New Shuttle line from Omiya.

Why we picked it

A national-scale railway collection twenty minutes from Kawagoe that most itineraries never reach.
