Kawagoe Kurazukuri Street

Kawagoe's main old-town street is lined with kurazukuri, thick-walled clay-plastered merchant warehouse-shops built in the Edo townhouse style as fireproof buildings. Most of those standing went up after the Great Kawagoe Fire of 1893, which burned a third of the town; the Osawa house of 1792 survived that fire and was one of the buildings that persuaded local merchants to adopt the style. The district was selected as a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in December 1999 and as one of Japan's 100 Beautiful Historical Landscapes in January 2007.
