Ryuzu Falls

竜頭ノ滝

Tochigi · Kanto

Ryuzu Falls carries the Yukawa river down a 210-metre rock slope above Lake Chuzenji, splitting at the base around a boulder into two channels that give the fall its name — the dragon's head. A teahouse with a picture window sits directly at the foot of the split, so the view is available without a walk, and a path climbs the side of the cascade to the upper road. The surrounding maples and azaleas make the basin one of the busiest stops on the Oku-Nikko circuit when they colour in October.

Why we picked it

Most Nikko day trips stop at Kegon Falls and turn back, missing the gentler cascade twenty minutes further along the same road.
