Asakusa and Senso-ji Temple
浅草寺Tokyo · Kanto
Senso-ji is Tokyo's oldest temple, founded in 628 and the head temple of the Shokannon sect, and its main hall opens at 6:00 (6:30 from October to March) and closes at 17:00 — the grounds and the Kaminarimon gate stay open and free outside those hours. The approach runs through Nakamise, a shopping street of small stalls leading from the gate to the hall. Asakusa around it is a working district of old shopfronts rather than a preserved quarter.

Note
- Day lines describe the Main Hall (Hondo).
- From October through March the Main Hall opens 30 minutes later, at 6:30 AM; the 5:00 PM closing is the same year-round.
- The temple grounds are open 24 hours year-round and are never gated — Kaminarimon, the Nakamise shopping street approach and the Hozomon gate can be walked at any hour, and the pagoda and gates are floodlit at night.
- Nakamise-dori shops keep their own hours, roughly 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM, and vary shop by shop.
- Admission to both the grounds and the Main Hall is free.
