Gokoku-ji Temple

護国寺のツツジ

Tokyo · Kanto

Gokoku-ji is a Shingon temple in Bunkyo, Tokyo, founded in 1681 by the shogun Tsunayoshi for his mother, and one of the few temples in the city whose main hall survived both the 1923 earthquake and the wartime firebombing intact. Its wooden Kannon-do stands at the top of a broad stone stairway in grounds that stay quiet even at weekends. The hillside azaleas flower in late April and early May.

Why we picked it

Many travelers overlook this temple in favor of more famous attractions in Tokyo.
