Nihonbashi

日本橋

Tokyo · Kanto

Nihonbashi is a public district with no admission — the bridge itself is a road you can walk across at any hour. The present stone arch dates from 1911 and carries the marker from which road distances across Japan are measured; an elevated expressway has run above it since 1963. Around it are long-established merchant houses, paper and knife shops and the department stores that grew out of Edo-period drapers.

Why we picked it

Many travelers focus on more famous areas like Shibuya and Shinjuku, overlooking the rich history and charm of Nihonbashi.
