Yanaka Ginza is an open-air shopping street with no gate and no admission, and most of its roughly seventy small shops trade about 10:00 to 18:00 — so it is an afternoon place, and quiet early. It runs a short downhill stretch from the Yuyake Dandan steps, lined with butchers, senbei sellers, tea shops and cheap kitchens in a low-rise quarter that escaped both the 1923 earthquake fires and the wartime raids.
