Yubatake (Hot Water Field)

湯畑

Gunma · Kanto

Yubatake is the iconic hot-spring source field at the center of Kusatsu Onsen, where roughly 4,000 liters of 55°C water a minute are cooled as they run through long wooden channels before being piped to the town's baths. Free to visit and open around the clock, the steaming field is illuminated after dark and is the town's central landmark and gathering point.

Why we picked it

Most visitors photograph the channels and move on, missing that the pale mineral deposits collected here (yunohana) are harvested and sold as a traditional bath additive.
