Kashiya Yokocho Candy Alley

Kashiya Yokocho Candy Alley

菓子屋横丁

Saitama · Kanto

Kashiya Yokocho is a short cobbled lane of traditional sweet shops a few minutes north-west of Kawagoe's warehouse street. Confectionery has been made here since the early Meiji period, and after the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake damaged Tokyo's makers the alley became a main supplier of dagashi penny sweets, with around seventy businesses working here in the early Showa years. Roughly thirty shops remain, and in 2001 the lane was selected for the Environment Ministry's 100 Fragrant Landscapes of Japan for the smell of its taffy and rice crackers.

Why we picked it

A surviving penny-sweet manufacturing lane, not a reconstruction — the shops still make what they sell.
