Mount Takao

Mount Takao is a 599-metre peak at the western edge of Tokyo, reached in under an hour from Shinjuku, and by most counts the most-climbed mountain in the world. Eight marked trails thread its forested slopes, a cable car and chairlift cover the lower half, and the temple complex of Yakuo-in sits partway up with a fire-walking rite in its calendar. The summit looks back over the city on a clear day and out to Mount Fuji in winter, and a beech-and-oak forest survives on the quieter Inariyama ridge.
