福生ホタル公園 protects a Genji firefly population along the Tamagawa Josui canal that once lit up the canal-side trees in the 1950s and then declined with urbanisation — the city set the park aside in 1973 specifically as a breeding refuge, and the local Fussa Firefly Study Group (福生ホタル研究会) still raises the fireflies here using the park's own spring water. Each June the city's Fussa Firefly Festival releases roughly 500 Genji fireflies here and along the canal near Aome Bridge.
