The Kanaya Hotel History House is the original samurai residence where Kanaya Zenichiro began taking in foreign guests in 1873, the lodging that grew into Japan's oldest surviving Western-style resort hotel. The house is preserved as a museum with its early guest rooms and registers, and Isabella Bird stayed here in 1878 and wrote about it. It sits on the slope below the main hotel, a short walk from the Shinkyo bridge.
