Hokkaido
Mount Hakodate rises 334 metres at the end of the sandbar that carries the city, and the observation deck on its summit looks straight down the isthmus with water on both sides — the shape that made Hakodate's night view famous. A ropeway climbs from the Motomachi slopes in three minutes, a bus runs the summit road, and walking trails thread the forested flanks, which are a protected habitat rich in birds and wildflowers. The deck, café and shop sit directly above the upper station.
