Kintaikyo Bridge

Kintaikyo Bridge

錦帯橋

Yamaguchi · Chugoku

Kintaikyo is a five-arch wooden bridge spanning the Nishiki River at Iwakuni in Yamaguchi. It was first built in 1673 by the third Iwakuni lord Kikkawa Hiroyoshi and stood, through repeated rebuilds, until a 1950 typhoon washed it away; it was rebuilt in wood in 1953 and its timber spans were renewed again between 2001 and 2004. The bridge can be crossed at any hour, with cherry trees along the riverbank in spring, cormorant fishing on the water in summer and the wooded castle hill colouring in autumn.

Why we picked it

Iwakuni sits between Hiroshima and Yamaguchi on a stretch most travellers pass through without stopping, so one of Japan's great timber structures rarely appears on an itinerary.
