Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum

広島平和記念資料館

Hiroshima · Chugoku

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum documents the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on 6 August 1945 through survivors' possessions, photographs, testimony, and material evidence of the blast. It occupies two linked buildings at the southern end of Peace Memorial Park: visitors enter through the East Building, which sets out the city's wartime history and the postwar nuclear age, then cross into the Main Building housing the core exhibition on the bombing itself. Admission is ¥200 for adults and the museum opens from 7:30 AM, earlier than almost any comparable Japanese museum. It is open every day except December 30 and 31 and a short mid-February changeover.

Why we picked it

One of the most visited museums in Japan and the reason most travellers come to Hiroshima at all — included because a first-time itinerary that skips it is incomplete, not because it is undiscovered.
