Shoden-ji
正伝寺Kyoto · Kansai
Shoden-ji is a Zen temple on the far northern edge of Kyoto whose garden contains no rocks at all — only clipped shrubs set in raked white gravel, arranged so that the distant profile of Mount Hiei becomes part of the composition. Admission is ¥500 for adults, ¥300 for junior high and ¥200 for elementary pupils, and it opens 9:00 AM–5:00 PM. There is no station within walking distance: it takes a city bus to Jinkoin-mae and then about 15 minutes uphill on foot, which is exactly why it stays quiet.
