Awashima Shrine in the fishing port of Kada is famous for the thousands of dolls left here in gratitude and for its March 3 hina-nagashi rite, when dolls are set adrift on the sea. Dedicated to women’s health, its precincts fill with an eerie, unforgettable sea of figurines beside Kada’s working harbour.
