Former Shimo-Yoichi Unjoya

旧下ヨイチ運上家

Hokkaido

The Former Shimo-Yoichi Unjoya is a restored merchant trading post built in 1853 on the Yoichi seafront, and the only surviving building of its type in Japan. Unjoya were fishery and trading stations operated under licence from the Matsumae domain, and the interior preserves the merchant's living quarters, offices, storerooms and the accommodation used by contracted fishery workers. It stands directly on National Route 229 next to the Yoichi Fisheries Museum.

Why it's hidden

The last physical trace of the Matsumae-era contract fishery system, standing unannounced beside a trunk road that most travellers use only as a route to Cape Kamui.
