Osaka · Kansai
Founded in 765 and the 23rd temple of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage, this hillside Shingon temple in the Minoh hills is famed for thousands of hand-painted 'katsu-daruma' (winning daruma) dolls left by worshippers across its mist-shrouded ponds, vermilion pagoda and mountain gardens. Best timed for autumn (Nov) for foliage; also cherry blossom in spring and hydrangea in June.
