Ako Castle Ruins

赤穂城跡

Hyogo · Kansai

The flatland castle of the Ako Domain, built 1648-1661, famous as the home base of the '47 Ronin' (Ako Roshi) whose 1703 vendetta is the basis of Chushingura. Designated a National Historic Site in 1971; the Otemon gate and corner turret were reconstructed in 1955, with Honmaru and Ninomaru gardens designated Places of Scenic Beauty.

Why we picked it

The castle of the 47 Ronin, where the story that became Chushingura physically begins — restored gardens and gatehouses rather than a keep, and almost empty outside the December memorial.
