Makino Metasequoia Avenue

マキノメタセコイア並木

Shiga · Kansai

Around 500 metasequoia (dawn redwood) trees line 2.4km of straight road toward Makino Kogen, one of Japan's most striking tree avenues and a set piece from the driver's seat. The avenue reads differently through the year: a cathedral-like green tunnel in summer, rust-red in late autumn, and a bare grey colonnade against snow in winter. Best timed for late November (koyo); fresh green early summer.

Why we picked it

A photographer’s secret in far-northern Shiga, well off the Kansai tourist trail.
