Nara Park (Nara Koen)

奈良公園

Nara · Kansai

A sprawling 502-hectare park at the foot of Mount Wakakusa that links Todai-ji, Kofuku-ji, Kasuga Taisha and the Nara National Museum, established in 1880 as one of Japan's oldest public parks. It is home to over 1,200 free-roaming sika deer, designated a national natural treasure, that bow for "shika senbei" crackers sold by vendors throughout the grounds.

Why we picked it

Not a hidden gem — Nara Park is the beloved, world-famous backdrop for the city's temples and its bowing deer, the connective anchor most visitors actually walk through, so it belongs as a core Popular-tier place.
