Expo '70 Commemorative Park — Tower of the Sun

万博記念公園・太陽の塔

Osaka · Kansai

Taro Okamoto's 70m avant-garde sculpture, the surviving symbol of the 1970 Osaka World Expo, stands in a large park with Japanese and Western gardens and the National Museum of Ethnology (Minpaku). Entering the Tower's restored interior — the Tree of Life atrium — requires an advance timed-entry reservation booked online; the park grounds and the Tower's exterior are freely accessible. The gardens carry cherry blossoms in spring and cosmos fields in autumn.

Why we picked it

Famous with Japanese day-trippers but almost entirely skipped by foreign visitors who stay in central Osaka — genuinely under-visited relative to its cultural significance.
