Hokkaido

A World Cup mountain above the lavender town, with 28 courses split between the Furano and Kitanomine zones and a 4,000 m top-to-bottom run served by a ropeway and a gondola. It faces the Tokachi range across the basin, and because it sits inland in the driest part of Hokkaido the snow is famously light. The Kitanomine base is a short walk from the town's ramen and izakaya rather than a purpose-built village.

Why we picked it

Furano is on every summer itinerary for the flower farms and on almost none in winter, when the same slopes hold some of the driest snow in Japan.
